An ebike, or electric bike, is a bicycle equipped with a motor and battery that assist with pedalling. The motor kicks in to help you when you pedal, making it easier to ride uphill, against the wind, or for longer distances. Some models also have a throttle, allowing you to ride without pedalling at all.

Do I need a licence to ride an e-bike in NSW?

No, not if it’s a legal one.

Right now in NSW (as of 2026) a road-legal e-bike can have up to 500 watts continuous power, as long as the motor only helps while you’re pedalling, cuts out at 25 km/h, and any throttle is limited to a slow 6 km/h walk-assist.

But here’s the important bit: from 1 March 2029 the limit drops to 250 watts continuous and the bike must meet the European EN 15194 standard. That’s the future-proof option.

If you bought a proper 500 W bike before March 2026, you’re covered by the grandfather clause until March 2029. After that, only the 250 W EN 15194 ones stay legal on public roads and paths.

No licence, no rego, no CTP needed for a compliant bike — same rules as a normal pushbike. Just wear an approved helmet and follow the usual bike road rules.

What’s this EN 15194 thing everyone keeps talking about?

It’s the European safety and performance standard that NSW (and most of Australia) is lining up with.

An EN 15194 e-bike has:
Max 250 W continuous rated power
Pedal-assist only (motor helps while you pedal)
Assistance that cuts out at 25 km/h
Throttle (if it has one) limited to 6 km/h walk mode
Proper electrical and battery safety testing

From March 2029 these will be the only e-bikes you can legally ride on NSW roads and shared paths. Buying one now means you’re set for the long haul and won’t have any dramas later.

Can I still buy and ride a 500 W e-bike?

Yep — for now.

NSW is still allowing up to 500 W continuous under the transitional rules, but the clock is ticking. Come 1 March 2029 that allowance ends (except for the grandfathered bikes bought before the change).

If you’re looking at a higher-powered bike, we’ll clearly label whether it’s road-legal under the current rules or strictly for private property / off-road use. Always better to check with us in-store if you’re not sure.

How do I know if the e-bike I’m looking at is legal?

Easy ways:
Look for the EN 15194 mark or certificate
Check the continuous power rating (not the peak “burst” number)
Make sure it says assistance cuts out at 25 km/h and throttle (if fitted) is walk-assist only
